“References to winter may refer to death, old age, pain, loneliness, despair or an end” (Richards-Gustafson, Web).As Tokyo Fox is slowly running short of films ‘set’ in Japan to review, it’s time to start a new series analysing those movies inspired by Japan that have been set in other countries, most commonly the USA. Having been to the new Hachiko statue at the University Of Tokyo recently, the Akita dog was very much on the brain so I guess this Lasse Hallström -directed re-make is the perfect place to start. The unfortunate event is when Winter comes. Marley exhibits his loyalty to his family by taking care of the children when needed, and most importantly, sticks around John’s side. He soon has his stomach twisted, causing him to be in a lot of pain, in such agony that he isn’t able to take a step further as he would wish. However, as Marley grows with his own family, so does his body. This leads to her wanting self-acceptance and her identity as a soon-to-be-mother. Jenny wanting to prove that if she can raise a dog correctly, then she could be a good mother. “Summer symbolizes freedom and growth for the characters as they search for love, self-acceptance and their identities” (Richards- Gustafson, Web). John first acquired Marley during the Summer after Jenny experiencing difficulties in maintaining a plant, causing her to feel hopelessness of her becoming a good mother. Marley looks after John’s children when him and Jenny are gardening or performing other chores, and it is clearly demonstrated that Marley devotes to his family which he dearly loves. Death, pain, loneliness, despair or an end …show more content… He follows John around the big house that they own, despite obvious signs of limping and often sitting a lot.
Parker suffers a drastic a heart attack during work and passes away, “References to winter may refer to death, old age, pain, loneliness, despair or an end” (Richards-Gustafson, Web). The season after Autumn is Winter, which is where an excruciating situation takes place, much the same as the tragedy in the novel. Parker ends up keeping Hachi as no one seemed to claim losing him. Parker finding Hachi symbolizes a new beginning, which means there is going to be a new change – Hachi’s adoption. “Autumn may refer to ripeness, change, maturity, beauty, sadness or preparing for an end or decline” (Richards-Gustafson, Web), as well as it was referred in Marley & Me. Autumn consists of shades of oranges, reds, yellows and browns. When Parker first found Hachi by the train station after returning from work at night, the current season was fall. Fall and Winter are the main seasons in this film as well may foreshadow events that later take place. Hachi is presented in the colors of orange and white, both being strongly represented in the film. Hachi is an Akita, …show more content… Hachi presents his loyalty, as well as Marley in the novel, by waiting for Parker at the train station every day, after he has deceased, but is soon reunited with Parker spiritually after Hachi passes due to old age in his sleep.
Hachi is first found by a train station, ultimately, being picked up by Parker and taken under his care. In the film, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, the characteristics of Hachiko can be interpreted as loyal, loving, and protective. Through similar characterizations and themes, both the film, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale and the novel, Marley & Me, demonstrate the unconditional love and loyalty that can exist between a dog and his master. Although it is thought that color is the most important, it only serves as a backup to support evidence of a certain message being displayed. Color plays an important role in both literature and films as they help the novels/films message, theme, and even figurative language come across to the audience.
